Mastering Climate Alignment: How the MarineDeCarb Sea Cargo Charter (SCC) Calculator Works

For shipowners, charterers, and cargo owners, transparently reporting and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is no longer just a regulatory hurdle—it is a commercial imperative. The Sea Cargo Charter (SCC) provides a globally recognized framework for assessing and disclosing the climate alignment of ship chartering activities.

With the implementation of the SCC's latest Technical Guidance (v5.2), calculations now strictly require a Well-to-Wake (WtW) approach, accounting for emissions from fuel production to its final combustion on board.

To simplify this rigorous process, we have developed the free MarineDeCarb SCC Alignment Dashboard. Let’s explore step-by-step how you can use this tool to evaluate your voyage's climate alignment with absolute precision.

Step 1: Input Your Voyage and Vessel Specifications

The SCC methodology evaluates how efficiently cargo is transported. To start, navigate to the intuitive left sidebar to input your operational baseline.

  • Enter your Vessel Name and select the appropriate SCC Ship Category (e.g., Bulk Carrier - Capesize, Tanker - VLCC).

  • Choose your Reporting Year to set the correct SCC trajectory target.

  • Most importantly, input your Cargo Mass (Tons) and Distance Traveled (nm). The system uses these exact figures to calculate your total "Transport Work", which is the core denominator of the SCC formula.

Step 2: Enter Well-to-Wake (WtW) Fuel Consumption

Since the SCC evaluates the entire lifecycle of marine fuels, our calculator is pre-loaded with the official WtW Emission Factors (EI) and Lower Calorific Values (LCV).

  • Simply input the mass (in Metric Tons) of the fuels consumed during the voyage.

  • The calculator supports a mix of traditional and alternative fuels, including HFO, MDO/MGO, LNG, Bio-Diesel, and Methanol. The engine seamlessly aggregates the total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) footprint of your fuel mix based on a Well-to-Wake basis.

Step 3: Instantly Assess Your Climate Alignment

Once your data is entered, the main dashboard instantly computes your results, providing four critical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  1. Attained Intensity (g/tnm): Your actual GHG intensity per tonne-nautical mile.

  2. Required Intensity (g/tnm): The SCC benchmark target your vessel must meet for the selected year.

  3. Alignment Delta (%): The most crucial metric. It shows the percentage difference between your attained and required intensity. A negative delta means you are below the target (Aligned), while a positive delta means you are above the target (Misaligned).

  4. SCC Compliance Status: A clear visual indicator showing "✅ ALIGNED" or "❌ MISALIGNED".

Step 4: Visualize Your Trajectory and Delta

Understanding numbers is good, but visualizing them is better.

  • The SCC Trajectory Chart plots the official decarbonization pathway for your specific ship type from 2024 to 2050 (the dashed white line). Your vessel's current performance is plotted as a distinct diamond marker, showing exactly where you stand relative to the curve.

  • The Alignment Delta Gauge right next to it provides a quick, speedometer-style visual of your percentage deviation from the target.

Step 5: Dive into Emission Details and Generate Your Report

When you are ready to share your findings with charterers or internal stakeholders, simply click the "Generate SCC Report" button on the left sidebar. The system will instantly compile your climate alignment results, alignment delta, and fuel consumption data into a standardized, corporate PDF document.
